Security Alert for all Samsung Galaxy S3-S6 users

This has been out there for a while but the alarming thing is that Samsung has chosen to do nothing.

http://money.cnn.com/2015/06/17/technology/samsung-galaxy-hack/

Here are some tips to limit your exposure to phone hackers:

1. stay off of unsecured WiFi networks.  If it isn't password protected, don't use it.

2. keep your phone set on "automatic updates" in your settings.  Many of the updates are to close security holes.

3. don't use your phone as the primary storage of any of your documents, photos, or other data.  Back your data up to a cloud site and keep the data stored on your phone to a minimum.

4. Don't store bank account or credit card data on your phone.

If you need help, call us and we can walk you through these steps.

We fix over $1,000,000 in phones every year in the state of Iowa

My partner Bob (who owns the Digital Doc stores in Eastern Iowa) and I calculated the other day that we are now repairing over $1,000,000 in phones somewhere in Iowa EVERY YEAR.   We do that one phone and one customer at a time.

It's hard to compare but given that most other repair shops have one store, we are, BY FAR, the largest phone repair operation in the State of Iowa.

In addition, our shops are locally owned and operated by Iowa-based companies.  All our tax revenues flow to the State of Iowa.

Take your business to an Iowa-owned store.  Get your phone fixed at Digital Doc.

Digital vs. Carbon-based Neuro-network memory

I went to a concert a while ago full of many many techies.  It was sponsored by a large tech company with roots in Seattle.

The concert featured the Imagine Dragons who, at the time, were relatively unknown.

I was taking in the awesome music when I looked around and saw this.

I gotta ask, what's more important, having a vivid memory of an awesome experience at a rock concert or a grainy video that NOBODY is going to watch posted on FB?

I can understand capturing a small glimpse of the event so you can have that reference in your scrap book but I'm willing to bet that if you forgot about the phone and enjoyed the event to its utmost, then the old ticket stub would fire off the neurons in your carbon-based neuro-network memory device and put a smile on your face.

BTW, Digital Doc Des Moines can replace both front and rear cameras in all popular (and most not-so-popular) phones.  We have cameras in inventory and can repair your camera today.

Get your camera fixed.

It's officially "Jump in the pool with your phone in your pocket" season!

As summer draws near, here's a quick DIY guide to treating a phone that has been submerged in water:

1. if at all possible, take the battery out as quickly as you can

2. do NOT attempt to charge the phone.  You will most likely blow out the battery and maybe even the phone itself

3. Place the phone and battery in some absorbing materials (rice does work!) and get the phone to us as quickly as possible.   If the phone was submerged, there is now water inside the phone.  Even if it still works, the damage process has now begun.   Your phone is full of connectors made of metal that are very small with lots of places for water to sit and begin to corrode.   The only way to stop it is to open the phone and give the insides a chemical treatment.

4. survival rates based on how much time passes before the chemical treatment:

90%  - within 1-2 days of exposure to water
  75% - 3-7 days
  50% -  > 1 week

While we can not guarantee that your phone will work properly again, the survival rates are worth the attempt.  If your phone isn't able to be recovered, we will give you a significant discount off the treatment process.

Yes we fix HTC One M7, M8, M9, and we'll most likely fix the M10

When you fix phones you quickly develop an understanding of the quality of each phone.  For my money, the HTC's are some of the best built phones out there.   Solid construction and feel and they look nice too.

The solid build typically means that they are hard to repair.  Why?  Because they were built to NOT open.  HTC uses extremely strong adhesives and very clever engineering inside the phone.  It's actually very impressive.

Our certified technicians are trained to repair HTC phones and we've fixed a number of them in just the last week.

Want to test how good a repair shop is?  Ask them to quote you a repair job on an HTC M8.  Most will run, not walk from that question.
