Snow damage your phone?
After our first snow storm of the season, 3 phones came into our store the next day - all with damage from moisture.
We were able to save two of them using our water treatment process. One customer had waited too long to bring his phone in. A bit more about our water treatment process:
1. phone connectors inside the phone corrode very quickly. The connectors often contain gold and other easy-to-corrode metals. Electrical current through the metal stimulates the corrosion process.
2. If you get your phone wet, DO NOT try and charge it. Putting it on a charger is like plugging a water balloon into an electrical outlet. You may have taken a hair dryer to it or put it in rice but there are many little compartments inside the phone that are very good at storing water indefinitely.
3. Get the phone to us ASAP. If we can get it the next day, odds of fixing it are 90+%. If it's been a week, it's around 50%.
4. While you at the store, ask about our water rescue bag - a specially designed bag made to store the phone until you can get it to us. Worth every penny.

Why Didn't My DIY Screen Repair Work?
After carefully disassembling your entire phone, you’ve successfully replaced that broken screen and put all the pieces back in place. You turn on your phone only to discover that the screen is now covered by dark lines, doesn’t respond to touch, or has gone completely black. Don’t panic –a nonresponsive screen doesn’t mean your phone is ruined. Try these troubleshooting tips to get your screen working again.
Poor quality replacement screen
Not all smartphone screen replacements are created equal. Lower quality replacement parts could be refurbished or unreliable. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you buy your replacement parts from a trusted source. If you're buying from eBay or Amazon, pay attention to the most recent quality ratings for screens they have sold. You should do business with people who sell thousands of screens with a quality rating of 98% or higher
Connectors not re-attached properly
Connectors on screens are very fragile. The newer phones have connectors that bend easily. Especially the iPhone 6 or newer. If you press in the middle putting them on, the ends can lift and ruin the connection. If you have lines or no working screen, try straightening the connectors and put them back on pressing on the outsides first then the middle.
Replacing only the glass
Some people sell "glass only" parts on the internet and most popular phone models come with the glass glued to the LCD. The only way to do a "glass only" repair is with special equipment that costs hundreds of dollars. If you are trying to fix your phone yourself, buy the full digitizer/lcd assembly
Damage from static electricity
Fuses can be blown by something as minor as static electricity, so you should be sure and ground yourself while repairing the phone.
Screws missing or out of place
the Apple phones use a number of different sizes of screws inside. Be sure you put them back in the exact screw hole you removed them from. Putting a different size screw in can ruin the phone.
Debris on internal components
Make sure you don't over handle the parts. Skin oil can ruin the connector. Some replacement screens come with a protective film that must be removed with alcohol prior to using.
Software not recognizing new hardware
You may have to reset your phone after putting on the new screen. You can do this by disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds and re-attaching it.
Camera shorted out
The front camera attaches to the phone through the replacement screen. Sometimes this can short out when replacing the screen. Disconnect the camera connectors and see if the screen works. If it does, you need a new front camera.
Cables or pins bent out of place
Inspect the connectors on the phone motherboard. Sometimes they can be damaged when removing the old broken screen.
If all else fails, bring it to Digital Doc and we'll fix it for you.

Tempered Glass program
Our TEMPERED GLASS program is working wonderfully. For only $29, we will put tempered glass on your phone after repair. The program extends the warranty to 1 full year and, (this is the best part) if you drop your phone again, there is a very good chance the glass will break and not the phone. And if that happens, bring it in and we'll put a new one on FOR FREE.

Windows Laptop Repair
A customer came by today and dropped off his Dell laptop. A very large box store competitor had it for a week and had shipped it to another state before calling him to let him know they couldn't get the part. This was after a $100 diagnostic fee.
He brought it to Digital Doc Des Moines. We do all our repairs right here in our store and we are very good at getting parts. Within 20 minutes we had the part ordered and a very satisfying estimate to the customer.

Phone Battery Maintenance
Batteries last the longest if you maintain a charging level between 50 and 80%. Letting them drain to 0% or charging to 100% put more strain on them. A battery has about 1250 full charge cycles in it's useful life. The article below points out that you should NOT put a cheap battery in your phone. Use original manufacturer's batteries only. We carry these batteries in stock in our store. Bring your phone in for a free battery checkup!
Here's an interesting article about battery dangers. I find it interesting that before each airplane flight, tight security procedures are targeting explosive devices. Then they open the gates and allow 150 explosive devices to board in the form of each passenger's smartphone.

Phone Repairs and Farmers
As the fall field work winds up, it might be time to do some maintenance work on your phone. Farmers rely on their phones heavily. Ham radios and CB's in the house kitchen have been replaced by smartphones. And when you need to reach someone, you REALLY need to reach someone.

Customer Service - Use Your BRAIN
How many times have you been asked to supply information that can be easily gotten off the internet? Today I had to order a replacement part for a medical device. I told them to ship it to my pharmacy and gave them the name and address. They asked for the phone number. I don't have their phone number handy. They said they needed the phone number. I told them I didn't have it. They were stuck. I asked them where they might go to find the phone number since I don't have it. No reply. I finally said "let me Google that for you". I looked up the pharmacy and read them the number.
Why, why WHY can't people think for a moment before asking for silly information they can easily get themself?
OK - end of soap box. But my commitment to MY customers is that these kinds of things are eliminated while you are in my store. Just simple, straight forward, easy and delightful customer service. Combine that with the best prices in town and it makes us an easy destination for your phone repair, computer repair, and tablet repair needs.

Cell Phone Repair - some notes from the front
Digital Doc repairs over 10,000 phones in Iowa every year. We have stores in Davenport, Des Moines, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids. Here are some learning points related to the industry and the business of repairing phones:
1. When smartphones were invented, it launched an entire market for phone repair. Today that market is around $4 Billion a year.
2. The early repair stores were small business owners. Many small businesses and jobs were created by the smartphone invention.
3. Today the larger retailer/franchises are moving in although they still only represent less than 20% of the total market for repairs.
4. As retailers/franchises take more market share, they will be able to leverage their purchasing volume to drive middleman market-making distributors into better pricing arrangements and ultimately dominate the repair market.
5. Certification processes take 3 months at Digital Doc. It takes that long to cover the range of phones on the market, soldering processes, computer repair skills, etc. If someone tells you they use "certified technicians", ask them how long their certification process takes. Most are a week or two at best and cover 3 or 4 popular phones.
6. Do not buy phone insurance from your carrier when you buy the phone. The monthly payments combined with the deductible will cost you $300 a year. Most repairs we do are under $150.

Cell Phone Repair Videos - not as easy as it looks
As the owner and operator of an electronics repair operation in Des Moines, Iowa, I have come across most of the repair videos that are out there in the ether (aka Youtube). Here are a few observations:
1. the phones being used in the videos have been opened before. There is no mention of the factory glue and/or tape you must overcome in a real phone. This is where you can easily tear flex cables if you don't know what to pull on.
2. they always show the process of removing screws but never how to manage the set of screws once they are off. Many phones have different sized screws for each hole and if you're not careful, you can end up getting confused. If you put a long screw in a hole meant for a smaller screw, you can ruin the motherboard.
3. there are many steps skipped. Anyone in the repair business knows to unhook the battery first. Yet many of these videos skip this important step. Taking parts off while the battery is still attached can easily blow out filters and ruin the device. Many an iPad has been ruined by skipping this important step.
4. there is never any trouble shooting required in the video. What do you do when you replace a screen and the front camera suddenly stops working? What do you do if the GPS doesn't work after a repair on an HTC One M8? These issues come up ALL the time and anyone who is a DIY'er will not know what to do.
Bottom line - get your device fixed by professionals and leave with a minimum of a three month warranty on all work. Get your phone fixed at Digital Doc!

Plentiful harvest
As the early yield results come in, I'm seeing 170-210 bushel yields for corn. Quite remarkable. Iowa continues to feed the world. I have an opportunity to drive through our great state most every week. I always love this time of year. I wish more people could come as close to their food source as Iowans do every day. It is quite humbling and gives you a feeling of gratitude for the things that come our way. I took this picture just a few days ago...
May you take the time to enjoy harvest season. If you find yourself behind a semi hauling 10,000 bushel of corn to market, don't be anxious to pass, be grateful that the world has such smart and dedicated farmers. Give them some room and enjoy the ride.

The Maturation of the Phone Repair Industry
Ever since Apple invented the smartphone in 2006 (releasing in 2007), the phone repair industry has taken off. In the last eight years, repair shops have cropped up in every major metropolitan location around the world.
Most of these stores were started by entrepreneurs with vision but not much capital. Mom and pop shops with low overhead and owner/operators fixing phones with a helper or two.
As the market has matured, major players have started to jump in. Digital Doc is one of those players. Digital Doc is a franchise owned by Family Video, owners of other franchises like Marcos Pizza and StayFit-24 fitness centers.
Digital Doc has four franchise locations in Iowa. Together we repair over 10,000 phones each year somewhere within the state.

Great resource for us in the device repair business. Here's a nice article about the new iOS being promoted by Apple for all their phones. We've loaded it on many of the models without issue.

Google AdWords - where is Deming when you need him?
As a student of Deming's statistical and quality principals throughout my professional life, I grew accustomed to looking at data with skepticism before using it to development my own strategies. Who is the source of the data? How many data points were used to reach the conclusions? Is the data statistically significant or is it just random noise? All important questions that today's "move it, advertise it, fix it later" crowd has never learned.
Example:
Google AdWords marketing "expert" calls me to discuss my advertising campaign. He talks confidently (he works for Google!) and has a plan for me. As we go through my results, he points out that I had a conversion from a particular zip code so I should target that zip code. ONE conversion. I asked him if he didn't think that may ONE data point was a little light on developing a new strategy. He said no, that I was wrong to ignore even a single data point and I was foolish for not throwing more money that way.
I asked him, "so if a person happens to walk into my store and ask for a repair for an {insert esoteric phone model here - one where there are about 50 in the world made), then I should immediately shift my target market towards that phone?" In light of the new spin, he wasn't so sure.
Statistically speaking, until the # of data points approaches 30 or more observations, the results you are seeing are pretty random. You can flip a coin and get 5 heads in a row and assume the world is all heads but over time, we all know that isn't true.
Before using data to make important decisions, look at it through Deming's eyes. And if you don't know who Deming is, go find out.

The smartphone drop test results are in and the winner is...
As smartphones get thinner and sleeker in design (slicker?), here is something to consider. Will your phone survive dropping it on a concrete or tile floor? All popular makes and models have been tests and the ranking (from most durable to least durable) is:
the earlier models play out in similar rankings. The HTC One M7, M8, and M9 are all built like tanks so their #1 ranking doesn't surprise me.
Thinking about that Galaxy S6? The outer cover is so sleek it will slide off anything you put it on unless it is exactly level. It looks so awesome but, sadly, the first think you should do it put it in a case that has some absorbing power and provides surface resistance.
And if you do break your phone, we repair all makes and models shown here (and a lot more). It's much cheaper to repair your phone vs. insurance. Get your phone fixed at Digital Doc Des Moines today!

You don't need phone insurance any more.
There is a very high likelihood that we can fix your phone for about 1/2 the cost of phone insurance. Next time you buy a new phone, decline the insurance and stop by our store for all your repair needs. In addition, you'll get to deal with adults and not a 23 year old hipster trying to make commission. Stop by Digital Doc Des Moines and feel the difference.

Iowans
Now that the corn is as high as an elephant's eye, it's time to talk about something important. People in Iowa are hard working. They aren't looking for gimmicks or fast sales pitches. Yesterday, a customer thanked me for our customer referral program but said "that's not why I'll send people to you." I asked her why. She replied "I'll send them because I like to refer my friends to good people and you are." Thank you.

upgrading your iPhone 6 to the new iOS 8.4 is NOT a given
We've had several customers in the store holding their iPhone 6 that, at this point, is nothing more than an expensive coaster. (technical term is "bricking the phone") Why? They tried upgrading to the new iOS version 8.4 and it totally ruined their phone. I don't mean quirky things like battery power or slowness. I mean the phone is completely shut down and won't take a charge.
Here's an article about some of the more common problems with the new software upgrade:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/07/02/ios-8-4-problems-fixes/
It's always nice to have the most recent iOS running on your phone so you can get all the patches put in since the last version but my recommendation is to WAIT until 8.4.1 comes out. There isn't much benefit in 8.4 vs. 8.3 and LOTS of disadvantages and risks.
The new MacBook OS is also a piece of junk (which is why I won't upgrade my personal MacBook to it). Oh, and the new iTunes is crap too as Apple is wanting to push their new music store and making the old iTunes not work.
I see a trend here. Apple has become the new MicroSoft. Now we need a company to come along and operate like Apple use to.

Security Alert for all Samsung Galaxy S3-S6 users
This has been out there for a while but the alarming thing is that Samsung has chosen to do nothing.
http://money.cnn.com/2015/06/17/technology/samsung-galaxy-hack/
Here are some tips to limit your exposure to phone hackers:
1. stay off of unsecured WiFi networks. If it isn't password protected, don't use it.
2. keep your phone set on "automatic updates" in your settings. Many of the updates are to close security holes.
3. don't use your phone as the primary storage of any of your documents, photos, or other data. Back your data up to a cloud site and keep the data stored on your phone to a minimum.
4. Don't store bank account or credit card data on your phone.
If you need help, call us and we can walk you through these steps.

We fix over $1,000,000 in phones every year in the state of Iowa
My partner Bob (who owns the Digital Doc stores in Eastern Iowa) and I calculated the other day that we are now repairing over $1,000,000 in phones somewhere in Iowa EVERY YEAR. We do that one phone and one customer at a time.
It's hard to compare but given that most other repair shops have one store, we are, BY FAR, the largest phone repair operation in the State of Iowa.
In addition, our shops are locally owned and operated by Iowa-based companies. All our tax revenues flow to the State of Iowa.
Take your business to an Iowa-owned store. Get your phone fixed at Digital Doc.

Digital vs. Carbon-based Neuro-network memory
I went to a concert a while ago full of many many techies. It was sponsored by a large tech company with roots in Seattle.
The concert featured the Imagine Dragons who, at the time, were relatively unknown.
I was taking in the awesome music when I looked around and saw this.
I gotta ask, what's more important, having a vivid memory of an awesome experience at a rock concert or a grainy video that NOBODY is going to watch posted on FB?
I can understand capturing a small glimpse of the event so you can have that reference in your scrap book but I'm willing to bet that if you forgot about the phone and enjoyed the event to its utmost, then the old ticket stub would fire off the neurons in your carbon-based neuro-network memory device and put a smile on your face.
BTW, Digital Doc Des Moines can replace both front and rear cameras in all popular (and most not-so-popular) phones. We have cameras in inventory and can repair your camera today.
Get your camera fixed.

It's officially "Jump in the pool with your phone in your pocket" season!
As summer draws near, here's a quick DIY guide to treating a phone that has been submerged in water:
1. if at all possible, take the battery out as quickly as you can
2. do NOT attempt to charge the phone. You will most likely blow out the battery and maybe even the phone itself
3. Place the phone and battery in some absorbing materials (rice does work!) and get the phone to us as quickly as possible. If the phone was submerged, there is now water inside the phone. Even if it still works, the damage process has now begun. Your phone is full of connectors made of metal that are very small with lots of places for water to sit and begin to corrode. The only way to stop it is to open the phone and give the insides a chemical treatment.
4. survival rates based on how much time passes before the chemical treatment:
90% - within 1-2 days of exposure to water
75% - 3-7 days
50% - > 1 week
While we can not guarantee that your phone will work properly again, the survival rates are worth the attempt. If your phone isn't able to be recovered, we will give you a significant discount off the treatment process.

Yes we fix HTC One M7, M8, M9, and we'll most likely fix the M10
When you fix phones you quickly develop an understanding of the quality of each phone. For my money, the HTC's are some of the best built phones out there. Solid construction and feel and they look nice too.
The solid build typically means that they are hard to repair. Why? Because they were built to NOT open. HTC uses extremely strong adhesives and very clever engineering inside the phone. It's actually very impressive.
Our certified technicians are trained to repair HTC phones and we've fixed a number of them in just the last week.
Want to test how good a repair shop is? Ask them to quote you a repair job on an HTC M8. Most will run, not walk from that question.

Phone insurance? I think not.
It's kind of amazing that so many people go for phone insurance when they buy a new phone. These are the same people that rapidly decline any kind of extended warranty when they buy a refrigerator.
A typical insurance plan costs about $10 per month and then there's a $175 deductible. So in a year's time, a person would have to pay $295 to replace a broken phone.
Let's say you drop your iPhone 6 and break the screen. If you have insurance, you can get it replaced using your insurance for $295. Or, you could bring it to us and have it repaired for $149.
If you declined phone insurance during that year, you would save the $10 per month so the repair would cost a net $29.
You decide.

If I see another picture of a broken phone screen...
Phones have become an intimate part of our person. Not just for making calls. Phones have become part of our ego. Our escape. Our library. Our creative pallet. Our everything.
And we are all trapped on one vicious hedonic treadmill where we count the months until our next upgrade so we can get a faster phone with more megapixels and memory and curves and the newest thinking on user interface and retinal cameras with 4G imaging blah blah blah...
And 8 months later, we find ourselves wanting.
But then you drop your phone and it lands exactly where it needs to land in order to crack the front screen and now you're stuck.
{insert obligatory picture of broken screen here.... NOT instead I'll illustrate the jumping capabilities of a baby goat}
Socially, no one wants to be seen with a broken screen unless you are a poor college kid or wear a t-shirt that says "I gave my $699 to a homeless shelter vs. buying a new phone" because you have no other option right?
Wrong.
You can bring your broken phone to us and we will fix it in an hour or so.
You will walk out with your phone/data/pictures/contacts ALL in tact and have saved hundreds of dollars.
You can still make that donation to the homeless shelter AND have your wonderful working phone that now looks pretty shiny because it has a new screen on it!
In addition to repairing all the popular smartphones, Samsung, iPhones, HTC's, Nokia's, etc. we also clean up laptops, iPads and other tablets, and other electronic devices.
Heck, we even fixed a motorcycle bluetooth helmet system the other day. I'm not sure the husband was too happy about it because it now allows his wife to talk to him while on the open road.
